WEEKLY POV: BRANDS NEED TO HAVE MORE FUN
In the beginning (🙏), social media was a bit of a playground.
A decade ago brands experimented, took risks and tried out ideas just to see what could happen. Posts went out faster and looser, with no huge expectation. Results were a bit of a bonus.
Not any more. Social is now mission critical. It sits at the heart of a brand’s marketing strategy. It’s often the first touchpoint on the customer journey. That raises the stakes.
Strategies are expected to deliver - reach, engagement, growth, conversion. Social ladders up to commercial goals and posts are poured-over for performance data.
That pressure has changed everything. Social strategies have become over-thought and creative ideas over-analysed.
Posts can go through so many approval loops that by the time they are given the green-light they are either too late or diluted-down to not be relevant.
It’s a problem…
Social moves fast. If you can’t keep up with the speed of the internet, you will not be seen.
Social is noisy. If you are not bold creatively, you will not be heard.
To truly deliver results in today’s social landscape, brands need to rediscover freedom and fun. That doesn’t mean abandoning strategy or ignoring data, it means creating space to play again.
The most impactful social moments often come from quick, culturally-relevant ideas that are timely. When every post is over-considered, you lose that spontaneity.
The brands killing it right now are nimble, playful and not afraid to drop something totally random.
Not every one works. But the occasional miss is worth the moments that land hard.
Getting back to having fun creates results. Posting with personality and freedom earns attention. Moving with speed means you show up in conversations.
So, simplify your pillars, trust the team and let them have some fun. The brands willing to play are the ones that people will notice.
